The European Parliament and the Council have reached an agreement today on the modernisation of the Directive on professional qualifications. “The modernisation of this directive is an important measure in our strategy to relaunch the European economy. In creating a more efficient system for recognition of professional qualifications, it will contribute to dealing with the labour shortage in Europe and will come to the aid of highly qualified job seekers, in particular the young”. The European Commission has adopted a proposal for modernising the Professional Qualifications Directive which will make it easier for professionals to find skilled jobs across Europe. In particular, the introduction of a European professional card will offer to interested professionals the possibility to benefit from easier and quicker recognition of their qualifications.

The Commission services have today launched a public consultation on the Professional Qualifications Directive (Directive 2005/36/EC). The consultation is an opportunity for stakeholders to highlight areas of the Directive they feel could be simplified and made more user-friendly. It also seeks views on how to better integrate professionals working in the Single Market, and raises the option of a European Professional Card.
